I tried Thai Derm because I had a coupon. Friendly service and excellent pad thai! Definitely will be my neighborhood thai restaurant.

I would call it just OK. I ordered salmon which didn't taste fresh. It's curry was great, but the fish was disappointing. I wouldn't go back.

I have been eating here since the 1980's and have long been a fan. The food is good and inexpensive and the service is very personal. Their lunch menu is a great bargain! I've introduced many friends to this place and they have alway been pleased with it.

I wanted very much to like this place. But there was this horrible funky smell in the air the entire time I was there. Crack a window! You serve food here. It was gross and is what sticks out in my mind about this place. The food was fine, but it could have had more flavor. The service was slow. If I go back and change my mind I will post an update.

Certainly the least flavorful Thai food I've eaten. I ordered Tom Kha Gai (chicken and coconut milk soup), and Pad Se Ew (fried rice noodles with broccoli and black bean sauce). The Tom Kha Gai lacked the sourness I've enjoyed in other renditions of this dish. The flavor was pretty flat, only slightly aided by a whiff of galangal. Next... Pad Se Ew: I opened the container and immediately my heart sank because instead of the usual leafy, intense Chinese broccoli, Thai Derm used regular American broccoli in this dish. The taste is totally different and not in a good way. I couldn't taste any black bean sauce, only grease. Not a pleasant dish. Better Thai food can be found further up Georgia Ave. in Wheaton.

Thai Derm was my first experience with thai food, and good thing it was, other places I have been have left me with nothing but disappointment and gas. This is -NOT- the place to go for sitting down. If you want ambience and adequate or ample room, head to Wheaton's Nava Thai. I actually like Thai Derm's food more than Nava, their gravy/sauce was actually that - sauce. Nava's is more like broth. I went to Thai Derm a handful of times when I lived in Silver Spring. I would've went more had it not been a long drive to pick it up. Good for take-out, crappy for dining in. Great noodle dishes.

More like 3.5 stars. You definitely don't go here for the ambiance or the decor. Random plates and older tables and chairs - things that you would usually see in a mom and pop kind of place. It's an easy place to have a conversation with those at your table. The service is a bit slow. It's definitely not a well oiled machine, but my food came out warm and within a few minutes of the other dishes that were ordered at our table. The food is good though and isn't that what we really care about? Yes, I've had better, but it's pretty spot on authenticity-wise. I suggest that you don't just order curry or pad thai like some of the other reviewers. If that's your cup of tea, you're really missing out on thai food. 3.5 stars but bump them up to 4 because you should support your local establishments. :-)

For Thai food--you can do so much better elsewhere. We had a party of 8. We were served our meals in increments. 3 (who ordered Chicken Panang) special of the day were served. 10 minutes later 1 other dish arrived. The remaining 3 meals were brought out over the next 20 minutes, so we all ate at different times: ) The food itself was not bad, but the service was horrendous. The waitress' recommendations were Pad Thai and Drunken Noodle which you can get anywhere.

I ordered the Pad Thai, spring rolls and a Thai Iced-T. The best out of the 3 was the Iced-T. The shrimp in the Pad Thai was flavorless along with the greasy Pad Thai. The Spring Rolls were nice in size and price but greasy and flavorless also. The Spring Roll sauce was as thick as honey and also flavorless. The people that work there are very friendly and if I HAVE to have Thai while I am at work I guess that I will go back but only if the Thai restaurant that's close to my condo is closed by the time I get home.

Good, not great. We went to Thai Derm in the sad time that Nava Thai was closed during its move to its new location. The decor is definitely strange. It is in an old apartment which might smell a bit, and not the delicious smell of Thai food. The little pond as you walk in is very weird and not even cute. The tables are a little sticky. But the food was pretty good. We happened to go on a weekday for lunch and the lunch specials are a great deal. I got the chicken curry which was very tender and a good portion. It also came with soup and a spring roll for only $5.95. The boyf got the panang chicken (our barometer for good Thai places). We enjoyed it but definitely no Nava Thai. So, a great deal for weekday lunches, but I would make the drive to Wheaton any day.

Let me preface my review with this; I didn't see not a single bug nor rodent! Thank my lucky stars! Thai Derm is across the street from my barbershop. I was starving so I decided to give the place a try. Besides, it's always on my grub hub...why not give it a go! I ordered the Siamese twin as my appetizer. The salad was fresh and crunchy. The beef was spicy but not over bearing. And the sauce had a lemony taste to it. Refreshing. For my meal, I had the spicy duck with basil and bamboo shoots and a side of white rice. The meal showed up right after I finished my salad. I must forewarn you, this meal is not for the faint at heart. It is REALLY spicy. However, there's a hint at the basil as an undertone. And paired the meat with the rice and it'll cool down. I would give this place 5 stars, but no one is perfect. Awesome meal!

I wanted to like this place, I really did. Had take out: Chicken Ka Prow and Ginger Chicken. Bother were rather bland and done much better at any of the numerous other Thai places within one mile of here. Even the mango sticky rice lacked enough mango. Thai food is all about flavor!!! I didn't taste much and that saddened me, Thai food is the best Asian cuisine in my opinion when done well. The depth of flavors are unmatched in my experience. No depth here... I will eat elsewhere.

Thai Derm is hidden away in the outskirts of downtown Silver Spring. I never would've eaten here if there were other restaurants open on New Years Day but I was hungry. When you're hungry, anything goes. After hours of walking around, this spot (along with Roger Miller Restaurant) was open for business. After eating a two course meal (composed of tangy lemon grass soup and with an authentic chicken Thai dish, can't remember the name) and waiting long periods of time for each dish to come out, I can safely surmise that this was an a-okay experience. The waitress was nice, the food tasted authentic, and the ambience was haphazardly put together with Thai trinkets, photos, and anything else found from Thailand. When it comes to my eating experience, my tangy, spicy, soup filled to the brim with meat and mushrooms was really good. It was so good that I was considering seconds. But had to put that thought on hold since $5.00 for a small bowl of soup did not match the price it should cost---which is $3.50. My entree, overall, was pretty bland. It lacked in the taste and arrangement department. I was happy that the dish didn't taste horrible and it was very filling since it had more chicken than empty green veggies. If you have a severe sugar tooth for sweet drinks, please get their Thai iced coffee, it tasted really good. That and the soup influenced me heavily in giving this place 3 stars instead of 2. Be careful with what entrees you pick since not all of their dishes have an equal balance of spice and taste.

I picked up lunch and ordered the panang curry with chicken and got extra rice for eight dollars and some change! I really could not believe how reasonably priced this was. Now, on to the food. The panang curry was more watery than I am used to. In this sense, it lacked the rich flavor I've had in the same dish from other places. One positive thing was the sizable amount of chicken in the dish and it was a larger lunch size than I expected, especially for the price. I'm willing to try this place for dinner. But I have a feeling Thai Charm is a better experience! Stay tuned. I plan to update my review when I visit for dinner.

Used to be a favorite of mine until they appeared in the Washington Post health code violation list for a pest infestation early this year. Once I know I can't trust a restaurant to be clean, I'm done, don't care how good the food tastes.

Had dinner here with a friend last week. It's a very mom-and-pop-ish thai place. The restaurant is kind of dark, old furniture, all that. Had spring rolls and vegetarian drunken noodles (with veggies and tofu). The food was good, but I think better at Charm Thai around the corner. There's only beer & wine, no full bar. The lunch special was super cheap ($5.95 for I believe the standard spring roll, entree, and drink).

We were having dinner late Friday evening here and we were totally grossed out by the cockroaches running from under our table top. When we looked over at the wall, there were 3 more running from behind a picture up and down the walls. The place seemed clean when we went in but there is nothing more gross that having live vermin running onto your tabletop while you are eating.

Curry puff, pad see eiw, and guew teow Thai Derm. They got two out of three decent. The decent: The curry puff was bland but was light, crisp, and the prefect ratio of dough and filling, perhaps the flavor profile was dimmed down for the American palate but if you know what real curry puffs taste like, then don't bother. The pad see eiw was tasty, lightly greasy, and a good amount of meat. A simple dish decently done. But you could get a plate of similarly prepared pad see eiw at the Thai Market for less. The bad: The giew teow Thai Derm was terrible. It was pad Thai noodles in a thin broth obviously quickly made with instant seasonings garnished with frozen pre-made fish cake, a hand full of bean sprouts, and a good bit of char siu (which tasted pretty good but made with Noh brand seasoning but at least it seemed they made an effort). I feel if I'm paying for a meal then it should taste and look Luke something I couldnt do at home, this missed on both points. Bottomline: Their lunch special is a deal and the food is decent enough to make it worth a visit. As a dinner spot however, I do not think it's worth the effort or money. You could get a much better meal at the Thai Market a block away.

Awesome food! Not the most up to date in terms of decor, but I go for the food.

  • Alex D.

The place is fairly mediocre as far as food quality goes. I tried their version of red curry and it was just ok. The lunch special price of $6.60 was very cheap and it did include a egg roll but the curry lacked flavor. The service was good but the establishment could stay a renovation. The food is 2 stars but the service was decent.

Great authentic thai food. Ive been coming here for over 15 years and this place is responsible for turning me into a thai food junkie. Super cheap too. Most affordable thai place in the area by far. The lunch specials are great and only 5.99 for an entrée spring rolls, AND soup (I think the lunch price went up like 40 cents recently but still a steal). I wish I worked in downtown Silver Spring so that I could eat lunch here every day. The staff are also very friendly and always recognize me when I come in (and even over the phone when I call in take-out orders). Sometimes they hook me up with free appetizers just for being a regular. Highly Recommended

We came here for lunch and ordered duck noodles, combination fried rice, chicken pad Thai, and a lunch combo beef with green pepper and onion dish. I didnt get to try the beef dish but the noodle soup was really flavorful and good, fried rice was full on protein including crabmeat and shrimp, and pad Thai was one of the better pad Thais I have had. Service was a bit slow.. There was only one waitress. The food took some time too~ maybe there was only on cook? Def worth a visit if you're in dtss- it's way better than Thai In Silver Spring located near all the shops.

I do NOT understand what is the rave about this place. I read all the rave on Yelp, decided to give it a try, and I was NOT impressed. I went there two weeks ago on a Friday and ordered the lunch special. l got the Pad See Ew with beef. The rice was hot and sticky, right out of the steamer which was fine. What wasn't fine was flavor of the beef and broccoli. It was sour like some strange oil was poured on it If you order Pad See Ew you know I was expecting something with more a sweet, savory flavor. It was so bad, I threw it out which really pissed me off because I was starving! Next time I want Thai to go, I will stick to what I know and call Charm Thai!

Went to lunch with my brother and sister in-law who had eaten here before and highly recommended it. This modest, clean little place served up what I consider some of the best tasting Thai food I'd ever had. For those looking for an outstanding decor and atmosphere, this is not the place- it's modesty personified. Our lunch consisted of a number of appetizers including the chicken soup with coconut milk, chicken satay and then shared a plate of pad thai. All were terrific with the pad Thai being among the best I'd ever had (Including on the streets of Bangkok). I hope to go again and again!

I really want to like this place - it's super close to work. Lunch menu is great - a lot of food for under $6. The woman that works there is SO nice, reminds me a lot of my mom. Her kids are also adorable. However, I've been there several times and it's really hit or miss. The first time I went, I got the lunch special and their service and food was good (Pad Thai, Spring Roll, Soup). Another time I bought rice to go with my leftovers from the night before and the rice was very clumpy and had obviously been sitting out for a while. That left a bad taste in my mouth - I had to dump it out and just make my own rice. So, a-ok is the best rating I can give in my book.

  • Johnny A.

This place was a very pleasant surprise. The lunch menu is less than $6 and comes with soup, egg roll and a side of rice! And the Pad Thai portion was pretty decent too. Also, the Larb & Geow Tod appetizers were tasty. Highly recommended, but don't expect a grand ambiance!

A solid three star restaurant. On our first visit we had the shrimp pad Thai (my gauge for all Thai restaurants) and the Thai Beef Noodle Soup. Both were three stars. The soup was surprisingly low key, with very subtle flavors, which we both enjoyed. The Pad Thai was mediocre, though I finished the entire plate. Service was somewhat uninspired and the interior was nondescript, though the restaurant looks like it use to be a townhouse. We'll probably be back to check out other options on the menu.

I've been to Thailand more times than I can count, because the cuisine and people keep me coming back. Thai Derm exemplifies that. I've tried every Thai place in Silver Spring and Wheaton, and this is the best. They have an extensive menu, and the non-standard items are as good as the staples. Service is great, and the food is exceptional. I usually don't order curry out, because it's easy to make at home, but their green curry is amazing.

My kids and I have been coming here since we moved here five years ago. It is the most kid-friendly place that we go -- the staff seems to really love kids, and there's a fun waterfall/duck thing for them to play with. The food is fantastic, and the cooks will make all kinds of things that aren't even on the menu. We love the tofu broccoli with peanut sauce!

  • Carlton M.

Most Americans will not like this restaurant, but it is the of the most authentic Thai restaurants I have been to. Easily the best Thai restaurant in Silver Spring. Pad Kee Mao or what most people call Drunken Noodles is amazing here!

I've been going to Thai derm for years. There's a reason I keep going back! The food is excellent, the service is friendly, the ambiance is welcoming, and the bill is small. I don't understand why this is listed at $$, it's definitely just one. If you go during lunch, they usually bring you out complementary lemongrass soup. I love lemongrass soup. Just in case you were wondering. You wouldn't really notice this place from the street. It looks a little bit like a hole in the wall, and I guess it kind of is. But it's one of those holes in the wall you discover like a hidden gem. There's a much bigger Thai restaurant a block away in downtown silver spring, where they will happily take twice the money and give you ambiance and food half the quality. Thai derm is NOT the most amazing Thai food I've had in my life, but it's consistently excellent and unbeatable for the price. I don't know where all these negative reviews come from, but you guys should give it another shot. One of you guys described it as flavorless?? I guess maybe the chef was having a really off night? I love the Tom Kha Gai!

We went here by chance, only because Mandalay Bay was closed. It's so cute inside..a little house with little knick knacks and mismatching dishes. HA I love it..reminds me of my family. To go to the bathroom you have to walk past/through part of the kitchen/food prep area and you see a cute lady chopping veggies. Everyone is very nice who works there. I've been twice now and both times I enjoyed my food. Everything we ordered was VERY tasty and flavorful. Really delicious food will keep me coming back. Their iced teas are good too. I don't usually don't use a bunch of sugar, so first the sweetness surprised me...but then I was addicted@ You can order them without milk too.

My second time ordering Drunken Noodles and I specifically asked for just chicken and broccoli. Of course, I received the order with other stuff in it. This is not the first time this has happened, but it will certainly be the last! Not going back.

pretty good food (pad thai, tom yum, mango chicken, panang, fried bananas, mango and sticky rice), nice service and easy to get to location. there are better out there but this is close, cheap, and convenient.

I am writing this review about a specific dish. Their garlic tofu. It. is. the. bomb. While my fav restaurant in this area is, and probably always will be, Ruan Thai in Wheaton, I sometimes just HAVE to come here for the garlic tofu. It has SO MUCH garlic! The serving size itself could be a bit bigger, but its just so darn delicious! I believe its generally run as a special and isn't on their regular menu, however whenever I ask for it they happily make it. Everything else here is average, not extraordinary or really noteworthy. However nothing there is bad or flavorless either, it's just pretty run-of-the-mill thai food. But that garlic tofu is just so garlicy. I have never tasted anything like it at a thai restaurant before!

Love Thai Derm! The people there rock (although one of our fave waitresses has moved to a Thai place on Wisconsin across from the Best Buy), and the food is honest family-style Thai food. Love the Panang Gai and the Pad Thai. They tend to offer central Thai dishes, and it's easy to share them. I always ask for extra rice, which is delicious. One of my fave dishes for dessert is the coconut ice cream, which has a great, icy texture and is studded with corn kernels. If you haven't had it, it might sound odd to a Western palate, but it is fantastic. I normally have an Asian beer here. For a while I tried to choke down their wines, but they're really no good, and after all, doing wine right with Thai food would require a really sophisticated wine list, and that means white table cloths and doubled prices, so I'm not in a huff about it. Great value, warm people, solid food, a real treat that is off the New Silver Spring national-chain treadmill.

  • Nikki F.

Not the best Thai food ever, but the best you can get in Silver Spring and the lunch specials are a great deal. But the kicker for me is that the ladies who work there are about the sweetest people ever. I like going there just to see and talk with them, it reminds me of home.

    (3)
  • Bela M.

Great food, good service, and a lot cheaper than Thai at Silver Spring, which is just down the street. This is a little hole in the wall kind of place, but the waitresses are always friendly and food is always great. Great place to avoid crowds and have a nice, quite meal.

ugh. One busy weeknight I ordered takeout from Thai Derm and stopped to pick it up after work. I had never been there before and when I walked in the place looked, dark, empty, tacky and a little scary. Someplace I probably wouldn't stay to eat dinner. I had ordered Pad See Ew, Thom Kha and a chicken curry dish). The Thom Kha was flavorless and the chicken tasted dry and tough, same as the chicken in the curry. The Pad See Ew was DISGUSTING. I've ordered Pad See Ew at nearly every Thai restaurant I've ever been to and it was just nasty. All the noodles were stuck together, the flavor tasted bad, like rancid bad and we ended up just tossing everything out and chalking it up to a loss. I would rather drink a cup of bleach then eat here again.

Thai Derm is a great, "hidden" Thai place in Silver Spring. Being 2 blocks from the Ellsworth strip, it doesn't get much foot traffic, but it is worth the walk. I have now had positive dining-in and take out experiences. I recently placed an order for take out and was told it would be ready in 15 minutes. I biked over and I'd say in no longer then 10 minutes was the food ready because it was sitting on the counter when I walked in. The portions are huge and cheap, my two favorite words when it comes to Thai food. The spring rolls, panang curry with chicken, and pad see ew with beef were delicious. For $23 dollars, it provided 2 people dinner and lunch the following day (and even more panang left over). That's a deal in my book! In the restaurant, the decor is strange but who really cares if the food is good.

An institution in silver spring, this place delights as old school Silver Spring. With it's Thai village waterfall diorama to cheesy decor balanced with good basic Thai food, it's a good bet to eat in or quick take out. Ask for the amazing Thai derm tofu with no fish sauce- shhhh -aka panang

  • Tracy P.

I give Thai Derm 5 stars because it is AUTHENTIC. If people complain about the food, it is may be that they are used to the reproduced, americanized carnival style crap that we are so often fed when we go out for Thai. I am from the west coast and it should be known that the Thai food there is better. Period. However Thai Derm holds many of the qualities I should expect from a west coast Thai restaurant. It isn't in the best location and isn't glitzy like other thai restaurants, but that only adds to it's peculiar ambiance I so much enjoy.

  • Jono S.

Like a lot of authentic Thai restaurants, you don't go to Thai Derm for the ambience. Not only is the restaurant family-run, it is located in a renovated apartment which lends itself to a homey atmosphere. Thai Derm is known for its large selection and quality authentic Thai noodle soups, which is unusual for the typical fare served in most Thai restaurants in the D.C. area. However, if you have a hankering for dry noodles or other non-soup dishes, then there are other better Thai restaurants. My cousin, who grew up in Thailand, loves eating at Thai Derm when she visits from out-of-town. Few things are more comforting than hot noodle soup. A special worthy of mention is popiah, a fajita-like fresh spring roll, that is only served at lunch Saturdays. Very few Thai restaurants that actually serve popiah make it as well or as fresh. Don't order popiah at Bangkok Gardens, which serves a limp, tasteless version.

2.5 stars. I feel guilty giving this place a negative review because I liked it as soon as I walked in. There's something sweet about it and all the people working there were very friendly. The decor is totally unplanned and looks like they just picked up random stuff and put it on the walls or in the display case or on that weird diorama-slash-pond-slash-display thing (wish I'd remembered to SAVE the picture I took with my phone). It's just so endearing. Then we got to the food. Oh my. I ordered the shrimp and vermicelli clay pot, and it had the toughest shrimp I've had in a while. And they came with the shells and legs still on. I get it that they're serving "whole" shrimp, and I don't mind the work it takes to get to the meat, usually, but that meat better be good. It wasn't. Ugh. The sauce on the noodles was tasty but too salty. The dish was supposed to have vegetables in it, but all it had was some anemic celery. So disappointing. My friend had the drunken noodles which he said were average ("3.5 stars"). I came away from Thai Derm wanting to go back, but not because of my meal. I want to go back because I think they can do better. I probably should have stuck to a simpler dish like a pad thai or pad see ew, since those would be more accurate indicators of the restaurant's quality. There was another man in the restaurant and he kept loudly telling the waitress how delicious his meal was, so I know they can make good food. They just haven't for me...yet.

Thai Derm is a hole in the wall, that before Nava Thai popped up, did occasionally satisfy some of my Thai cravings. It's very tacky, run down (I suggest going to the bathroom before you arrive so that you don't have to use theirs), and has been known to have an occasionally creepy crawly sighting (now working in Georgetown and eating there for lunch everyday, I now realize that in "older" buildings this is more the rule than the exception, but it still grosses me out). I have had both their red curry and green curry, and one thing I like is that they make their own spring rolls and they don't have that previously frozen out of a rundown NYC factory taste.

A selection of "appertizers" were part of their daily specials that were on their menu board and we selected the curry puffs which were decent but I've had a lot better. They have a pretty extensive menu but it's really jumbled with no clear categorization of dishes. I ordered the chicken noodle curry soup which was good though overpowering with the fish sauce and I would of preferred it if they had used fresh rice pho noodles rather than the dry kind. My friend got the daily special chicken yellow curry which had very tender chicken and looks as if its been simmering a long time which to me is great because that's more time for the flavors to love each other. Service is friendly and I'd come back to try some of their other dishes. The diorama/pond that Kate M. mentioned in her review is so crazy and random! There are a bunch of little rubber ducks all over it. I got a pic of it too but will have to remember to d/l it from my phone later. That's reason enough to try to come back.

I have been here twice and every time I am very happy with my food. I have had the green and red curry. My favorite was the green curry with the veggies and chicken. They have a pepper tray that adds more spice if you want it. When you have leftovers, they give you extra rice for free.

For Thai in downtown Silver Spring, this is my go-to place. I always get take-out, which is always ready super fast. It's not the fanciest or most innovative or greatest Thai ever. However it's reliably a good meal, it's well-priced, and the people are very nice. I enjoy that it's been there forever, and I also love to support local small business. So, all around, it's a win.

Small place and not fancy, but food is really good. Just don't order wine here - stay with beer if you need a drink. I tried almost all dishes on their menu - best are with chicken and pork.

Really wonderful, authentic Thai food in an unlikely locale. The restaurant is family owned and operated, which only adds to the charm. I highly recommend their lunch specials, which are quite filling. I especially like the green curry chicken. One of the best I've had in the city.

maybe i'm just a sucker for small, family owned restaurants, but i love thai derm. the food is delicious (and cheap compared to every other thai place i've been to in this area!), and everyone is very friendly. i have yet to order something that disappoints. it might not be "the great date restaurant", but it's exactly what i want: a local, friendly place that's great for take out, or a quiet night out with friends.

Thai Derm is a small, homely, family-owned and operated Thai restaurant. You definitely do not want to go here for the decor or the ambiance, but the food is delicious and the price is right! I've been eating Thai food for most of my life, and Thai Derm ranks up there as one of my favorite Thai places. We lived around the corner for almost 3 years and we much preferred Thai Derm to the slightly pricier and nicer Thai at Silver Spring. Not only did we get to know the family, but the food tastes much more authentic, and it has a calm and quiet atmosphere that we liked. It almost feels like you are sitting in their dining room. The only drawback I could see is that they don't deliver, but for what they do (good Thai food at a very reasonable price) they do it the best!

Thai Derm is a small family-run restaurant just south of the new developments in downtown SS. Nothing fancy here - but the food is consistently good, the prices are very reasonable and the servers are friendly and helpful. Additionally, they have a varied menu with plenty of non-meat items, along with fish and all the stuff carnivores like. Also, you can pretty much substitute tofu in any meat dish they serve. I highly recommend it.
